This teapot was made at the Coalport factory in Shropshire. Founded by John Rose, the factory specialised in the production of elaborately decorated porcelain in the Rococo revival style. Skilfully moulded with reeds and shells in turquoise enamel, with gilding and applied flowers in relief, this teapot would have been expensive to manufacture and vulnerable to damage during both its production and use. It may therefore have been intended only for display purposes.
