The mid to late 19th century saw revival of medieval culture, its influence in art reaching across Europe. This tea caddy made from horn with engraved ivory plaques depicting stag and deer in a countryside landscape were materials and decorative motifs prevalent in the art and culture of Bavaria since the 16th century. During the Franco-Prussian wars and the resulting unification of Germany, nationalism and pride in the states heritage became even more important to the residents of Bavaria, with this type of craftsmanship being titled ‘Bavarian ware’.
